“Well Alright”: The Other Xiaorong Cocktail 78 Song

I was at 2Kolegas the other week talking with my old friends Dave O’Dell and veteran Chinese rock producer Wang Di about our old band, Xiaorong Cocktail 78, which I posted about a while back. Pangbianr.com recently ran an interview with me discussing Beijing’s rock scene from back in those days and the post included a link to our song “Over,” which we recorded at our one and only studio session in the spring of 2001, but that wasn’t the only track we recorded that day.

Flipped this Q-Tip joint with a loop sampled from Can’s ‘Moonshake.’

Biggie Smalls vs John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat – Notorious (JChan Fairchild Remix)

These cats were proving that White Men can feel the blues long before The Black Keys (who I dig immensely). Used a sample from their 1971 collabo with John Lee Hooker on Biggie’s “Notorious.”

Onyx ftg Biohazard – Judgement Night (JChan Piledriver Remix)

Early rap-rock collabos were pretty hit-or-miss – in the case of the Judgment Night soundtrack, it was mostly miss. Given both groups’ penchants for screaming, Onyx’s collaboration with Biohazard (in the wake of their early 90s uber-meathead anthem “Slam,” one of the first musical bridges between the ghetto and the trailerpark) was one of the better tracks on the ’93 release. I think it would have sounded much better like this:

EPMD and Keith Murray vs A Certain Ratio – The Main Event (JChan Certain Ratio Remix)

One wouldn’t think that post-punk – no matter how funk-influenced – would blend well with EPMD. Judge for yourself.
