Like most kids growing up in a Chinese household, I was introduced to the story of the Monkey King (Sun Wukong) from Journey to the West at an early age. Nearly 40 years later, I still think it’s a fantastic story and fondly recall reading Arthur Waley‘s English translation and watching the excellent Shanghai Film Studio cartoons as a kid.
My daughter is a fan as well and has watched ‘The Monkey King Conquers the Demon‘ (金猴降妖) – the third installment of the Shanghai Film Studio series – at least a few dozen times. I still enjoy it as well, primarily for its distinct soundtrack, composed by Hou Jiakang and Yu Miaoying, which is filled with eerie violins, creepy chimes, haunting harp sequences and awesome analogue sound effects – all very reminiscent of Polish Jazz composer Krzysztof Komeda‘s soundtracks for Roman Polanski films.
